I truly believe multi-tasking will be introduced with iPhone OS 4.0 but it won't have the full program running in the background. More like helper programs similar to those you see on the Windows platform. There also will probably be limits set so it would be hard to bog down the device or crash it.

With all the advancements Apple has made regarding the iPhone alone, I doubt multitasking is such a difficult concept to bring to life w/o sacrificing design or processing power... not to mention, this damn thing has a 1GHz processor... it can certainly handle it. Also, I don't want another netbook... and Jobs even said that netbooks are crap, which I totally agree with... I just want to see something more than an overgrown iPod Touch. :-)

Sandra, that just the point though - this is not advertised, or marketed as just a 'simple mobile device'... they are pushing it as their "most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device". If it's so magical... why can't it do more than one thing at a time? I'd love to have AIM running while I work on a document, or Twitter in updating while I browse the web. With that being said, I truly believe they are leaving a LOT unsaid with what it can do, not to mention their intentions. Look at my previous post about iPhone OS 4.0... they've already said 4.0 has a new way to run background apps so multitasking may not be such a far fetched idea after all.

From wired:

From the demonstrations at the Jobsnote, it appears that, like the iPhone, we can't run applications in the background. This will annoy many, but it will not matter at all to the target user, who will be using the iPad to browse and consume media. In fact, this user will benefit, as the lack of CPU-cycle-sucking background processes is likely a large part of that ten-hour battery life.
If you are authoring content, like this post, then multiple browser windows, a text editor, a mail client and a photo editor all make sense. If you're reading an ebook, not so much.

You realize that if they had true multitasking on the iPad, it would have to be much bulkier because you would need more processing power and memory which needs ventilation and not to mention a bigger battery. Anyways, I'm sure there'll be some way to do duo-tasking on the iPad in the future, right now they want to keep it simple and make sure everything "just works" as all their products do. It's not meant to be a notebook or desktop replacement. They already sell those and will continue to. All in all, I'm very happy that Apple didn't just try to make another iteration of the netbook.

From Gizmodo:

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

Why would you even need multitasking? Sure, it's useful for a laptop or desktop running a powerful OS, but multitasking would create so much screen clutter and hog so much memory and processing power it might crash the mobile device.

A useful feature and something I use is called "save-and-get-back-to-it-later". Get interrupted reading a book? Bookmark your spot. Same with movies, documents, web browsing, whatever...
